A couple years after I moved to New Jersey my best friend from elementary school, Danica, was out in Long Island visiting her relatives. I went to see her and I remember talking to her mom. She said, "you can transplant anyone into California, but you can't take a Californian out, they miss it too much." In all my 6th grade wisdom I think I said, "okay, can I have some ice cream now?" It always stuck with me because I thought that was silly. In 6th grade all I really needed to be happy was a couple friends and a cute boy to write about in my journal- and you can get that anywhere, I knew I would be different from my mom. I would love being anywhere...
Fast forward about 15 years and here I am living in New York City, one of the coolest cities in the world, and that statement echos in my ears constantly. I think what it causing the problem is the weather. Weather in California is pretty much perfect. It's not too humid, if it does get cold it's for about 3 days out of the year and unless you live in the San Fernando Valley, it rarely peaks 85 on a hot summer day. It's heaven. Whereas in New York it's been brutally cold (14 degrees not including wind chill), slushy, rainy and altogether icky for the last few months. I thought maybe spring had come because yesterday it was 60 and sunny and beautiful, but looking at the weather I don't think I'll be that lucky.
So maybe it's that you can take the girl out of California, she will just miss the weather terribly.
In other (semi) exciting McCombs news, after getting an ID badge where my hair is BRIGHT yellow, I decided maybe it's time to tone down the platinum blonde a bit... I don't know if you can tell, but it's a lot darker... and somewhat close to my natural color... I'm not really sure how I feel about it.. and no I'm not fishing for a compliment. Just saying...

We Believe....
... in families
... in forever
... in Jesus Christ
... in the Book of Mormon
... in love
... in many things
It's been working great for us...
"In order to have joy, you need to understand that, as a child of your Heavenly Father, you inherited divine traits and spiritual needs--and just like a fish needs water, you need the gospel and the companionship of the Holy Ghost to be truly, deeply happy.
Because you are the offspring of God (see Acts 17:28), it is incompatible with your eternal nature to do wrong and feel right. It cannot be done. It is part of your spiritual DNA, as it were, that peace, joy, and happiness will be yours only to the degree you live the gospel."

I am a Utah girl and I still can't stand the cold. Every year I am so ready for summer to come around! I am glad you have each other to stay warm! Love you both!
ReplyDeleteI like your flowing luscious locks! And I feel the same way about winter. I've pretty much got Tim convinced to move but Missoula is the farthest he's willing to go right now. Maybe another miserable winter will convince him we need to move to a warmer climate. Thanks for the posts, I love reading about your lives. (In a sisterly non-creepy way).
